Joey and I had a great talk in Subway (his favorite place) last night.
He was trying to puzzle out some things and helping him helped me.
He told me some things people have told him about God and Heaven. They are very sure they are right about these things. But when I asked him where in Scripture those things could be found, he said they could not.
I thought that through and said that we all have a tendency to be very fond of our own opinions and even to believe they are derived from Scripture, even if they are not plainly stated there.
But I was realizing as we talked that there is not really a problem if we regard our own opinions as of man and the Scriptures as of God. When we start putting words in God's mouth, there is a problem, particularly if we are contradicting something He has said.
Another related thing we talked about is a high view of Scripture. Sometimes we might get casual and think Scripture is ten feet off the ground but our opinion is eight feet off the ground. Like believing that after we have walked with God for a long time, our opinions get very holy or something.
Joey and I concluded that the separation remains huge. God's Word is His very communication to us and could be seen as being as far above us as the sun. In that comparison, our opinions would not be as far off the ground as an ant. That is not to make little of us for God loves us. It is to make much of His Word and the great condescension with which He reached us.
I have heard many times that we should always counsel with Scripture not our own advice. My talk with Joey reminded me again about why we do that!
Let God be true and every man a liar!
Very true
The reason I am helping Joey with this is he is still doing his anger management curriculum and he will react much less to what others say when he realizes that is their opinion, not God’s Holy Word.
We are teaching him to ask that question first? “Is this just an opinion? Then it is up to that person, working with his or her pastor, to make sure their opinions line up with God’s Word.”
We, on the other hand, are responsible to see that we are lined up with God's Word.
